Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Tourism development plays a vital role in the economic and cultural growth of any region. In Jos South Local Government, Plateau State, known for its scenic landscapes and cultural heritage, print media is a significant promoter of tourism. Newspapers and magazines highlight tourist destinations, events, and cultural attractions, thus drawing attention to the region’s potential. Through advertisements, travel features, and success stories, print media fosters awareness and encourages investment in the tourism sector. This study examines the impact of print media on tourism development in Jos South, focusing on how it influences public perception and drives economic activities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its rich cultural and natural attractions, tourism in Jos South Local Government faces challenges such as low visibility and inadequate promotion. While print media has the potential to bridge this gap, its effectiveness in showcasing the region's tourism potential has not been fully explored. 1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to tourism stakeholders, including government agencies, media organizations, and private investors, by highlighting strategies to enhance the use of print media in tourism promotion. It will also add to the existing body of knowledge on media and tourism.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is confined to the role of print media in tourism development within Jos South Local Government, Plateau State. It does not cover other regions or media platforms.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Tourism Development: The process of enhancing and promoting attractions, infrastructure, and activities to attract tourists.

• Print Media: Printed publications, including newspapers and magazines, used for disseminating information.

• Public Perception: The opinions and attitudes held by people regarding tourism in a specific area.
